About The Sculpin Base - USSVI
History of the Sculpin Base - USSVI
The idea of starting a second Kansas USSVI Base was a challenge by a USSVI National Officer. This officer was a one-time Commander of a Base in the Southeast region as well as a Regional Director of the USSVI. When a member was relocating from the SE region Base to KS after their retirement, that member was challenged to start a Base.
The member took the challenge and started making phone calls. It wasn’t long and there was enough total USSVI and new members to formulate the Base and submit a charter application.
Base names in many cases are named after submarines and many after lost boats. Prior to the submission a name for the Base was needed. One suggestion was to name the Base the “Cromwell Base” after Medal of Honor recipient Captain Cromwell who gave his life to protect secrets of wolf pack operations aboard the scuttled Sculpin. Since Cromwell was not a submarine, the name Sculpin Base was chosen. The Sculpin Base received its charter in August of 2020.
COVID-19 slowed the Base initially but we are moving forward and starting programs, interfacing with our communities, and gaining members in our corner of Kansas. Come be part of our history.
